Messi vs Ronaldo: Stats and trophies

Lionel Messi and Cristiano Ronaldo are two of the most influential footballers in the history of the football. They've played in various leagues, with teammates of all generations and some of football's most iconic moments. They have been at odds for a long time, but their routes to success have been different, influenced by their personal history, style of play and their own achievements. It is helpful to have some background on their early life and how they got to their careers in professional football in order to compare them.

Both Messi and Ronaldo have had incredible club careers, having won many domestic and international titles in Europe and beyond. Messi began his career with Barcelona, later playing for Paris Saint-Germain and Inter Miami. Ronaldo made his home in Manchester United, Real Madrid and Juventus, to name a few. They can be compared on the basis of their goals and trophies won, their consistency and influence at club level, across all these teams.

Arguably, both have been crucial players for their respective national teams, representing Argentina and Portugal in international competitions for many years. Messi went on to bring Argentina international success, such as in the Copa América and FIFA World Cup, while Ronaldo took Portugal the European Championship and UEFA Nations League. Their international careers are another measure of their achievements, leadership and contributions outside of club football.

One criterion of success in the Messi-Ronaldo debate is trophies, but of course the team's success relies on the quality of the team and the nature of the competition. Both have won league titles, domestic and major continental trophies, plus international silverware. By comparing their trophies they can see what they have accomplished with their clubs and countries.

One of the most talked about subjects in the Messi vs Ronaldo rivalry is goal scoring. They have both had outstanding scoring records in various leagues and tournaments but play different ways and attack different. Career totals provide a general sense of their ability to finish the game and longevity, while season-by-season totals show how their scoring output has evolved over the years.

But Messi and Ronaldo's role in a team isn't just in goals. Assists and chances created and participation in attacking moves also shed light on their impact on a game. Messi's crossing and his playmaking has always been a key part of his game, while Ronaldo has been able to score goals, move and play in the final third. Overall attacking stats give a more complete picture of each player's contribution to their team and how they've affected their teammates.

Messi and Ronaldo's impact on games goes beyond just goals, and their ability to dribble and pass is a key aspect of that. Close control, ability to beat defenders in tight spaces and vision to create chances with precise passing are all attributes of Messi. Ronaldo has also been able to use his dribbling skills to beat opponents, and his passing ability to open attacking spaces. A comparison of their dribbling and passing numbers provides a better understanding of the creativity, technical skills and impact on attacking play that they delivered.
