Five Reasons Lamine Yamal Will Never Become Barcelona’s Next Ansu Fati
Lamine Yamal scored twice in Barcelona’s 5-2 win over Rayo on Monday, yet the body language debate from last week’s Elche game refuses to go away. Here are five reasons why the Ansu Fati comparison completely misses the point.

Lamine Yamal scored twice and created another in Barcelona’s 5-2 win over Rayo Vallecano on Monday, and yet the conversation around him last week was almost entirely about a substitution.
Two Sundays ago at Elche, Hansi Flick took him off after 65 minutes in a 5-0 win. The teenager walked off looking visibly unhappy, and that image made the news. On El Chiringuito, presenter Josep Pedrerol revealed the club had received pictures they had not seen before and planned to check in with Yamal directly.
Some fans took that and ran with the Ansu Fati comparison. They see him as another Barcelona wonderkid, unhappy, heading toward a downward slope.

That comparison is lazy, and Monday’s brace made it even harder to sustain.
Here are five reasons why Yamal’s situation is structurally different from everything that derailed Fati.
1. His injury record has no comparison to Fati’s
Ansu Fati suffered a torn meniscus against Real Betis in November 2020 that ran into 10 months on the sidelines, multiple surgeries, and a career direction he never fully recovered from. Between 2019 and 2026, he suffered 19 separate injury stints across his career, including two muscle injuries in a single three-month window at Monaco between November 2025 and February 2026. His market value fell from €80 million at its peak to around €14 million.
Yamal’s injury history across the same period lists three stints of two groin problems in September and October 2025 and a foot issue in February 2025, all minor and short. He played over 2,000 minutes in La Liga last season alone and missed no major period of football. What broke Fati’s career was his body. Yamal’s body has given him no such indication.
2. He is already operating at a level Fati never reached
Fati was exceptional in glimpses before the injury. He scored 7 La Liga goals in 2019-20 at 17, became the youngest scorer in Barcelona's history, and was given Messi’s number 10. But his best complete season at the club was 2022-23, with seven goals across all competitions, and he never sustained output at the top level.
SEE ALSO
Yamal finished 2025-26 with 16 La Liga goals and 12 assists. He won the World Cup with Spain in July, playing every minute of the knockout stage including the final against Argentina. He is 19 and already on 54 career goals for Barcelona across 157 appearances. That output did not happen because of hype. We all see it happening.
3. Flick does not manage him carelessly
The Elche substitution at 65 minutes was not a sign of concern about Yamal. Flick has been open throughout pre-season and the early weeks that Yamal carries a heavier minute load than any other Barcelona player due to his World Cup involvement right up to July 19.
There was camp, the final, then barely three weeks before the club pre-season. Flick is protecting his body, not questioning his form. Yamal started and played 90 minutes against Athletic Club four days after the Elche game. He then scored Monday’s opener in the 21st minute and added a second in the 90th with a curled strike into the bottom corner. A player in decline does not do that. A player being managed carefully does.
4. His relationship with the Barcelona system is different
Fati’s problem after returning from injury was that the game had moved on around him. Xavi’s Barcelona had developed a structure that relied on high press, positional fluidity, and technical precision, and Fati, who was a direct, instinctive forward, could not slot back in easily.
He was a scorer in a system that needed more. Yamal was built inside Flick’s structure from the beginning. He understands how to combine, when to carry, when to release. That intelligence protects him in a way that pure finishing instinct never protected Fati.
5. The body language debate misreads competitive frustration for decline
Every elite forward gets substituted and does not love it. Karim Benzema was photographed looking furious on the Real Madrid bench after being taken off during their 2022 Champions League run. Cristiano Ronaldo famously walked down the tunnel after substitutions without acknowledging the manager. Nobody called it a career in decline. Yamal walking off unhappy at Elche after a goal involvement in a 5-0 win is a 19-year-old who wants to play football.
The club’s check-in, as Pedrerol reported it, was a response to images the staff had not seen rather than an intervention born from internal alarm. Fati’s decline was built over years of injury returns, lost form, and a body that refused to hold up. What happened at Elche was one substitution, captured on camera, shared many times. Yamal answered it on Monday with two goals. That is about as complete a response as football allows.
