Pep Guardiola vs Jose Mourinho: Who Is the Better Tactical Coach?

Jose Mourinho told Pep Guardiola not to start the party yet, and Guardiola has always wanted the ball at his team’s feet. Here we look at who is the better tactical coach.

Before the 2010 Champions League semi-final, Jose Mourinho told UEFA he did not mind if the world called Barcelona favourites, because he thought Inter had a 50 percent chance of the final. Pep Guardiola, whose side were the holders, said Inter had been Italian champions four years running and that his own team had just spent 14 hours on a bus after a league game. Inter won the first leg 3-1 at San Siro. At the Camp Nou, Thiago Motta was sent off, Barcelona won the night 1-0, and Inter still went through 3-2 on aggregate.

Mourinho later said he told Guardiola, on the touchline, not to start the party yet because the game was not over, and he called that defeat the most delicious of his career because they did not lose 1-0, they won 3-2. Lucio, who played in that back line, said Mourinho was the best coach he had worked with, and that his hand on the tactics had helped the team a lot.

That night shows us one of the clearest pictures of how Mourinho sets a team up. He wanted Barcelona to have the safe pass, and he wanted the break to come through Eto’o, Sneijder and Milito once the full-backs stepped up. He had already done a version of it at Porto in 2004, when they won the Champions League as outsiders, and at Chelsea in 2004-05, when they conceded a record 15 league goals, kept 25 clean sheets and won the title by 12 points. The Nerazzuri then became the first Italian club to complete the treble. As ESPN confirms, he is also the only coach to have won the Champions League, the Europa League and the Conference League.

Guardiola starts from the ball, and he has suggested that many times. In 2019 he told COPA90 that when the ball is in the air it is half and half, and when the ball is at your feet the ball is yours. Two years later he told reporters that City’s defensive record was good because they had the ball 67 percent of the time, and that if you have the ball the other team does not.

At Barcelona he put the full-backs inside, kept a spare man in the first line, and asked Messi, Xavi and Iniesta to receive between the lines. At Manchester City he asked the goalkeeper to play as an extra outfield player, and he kept five men behind the ball when the attack went forward. Manchester City scored 100 points in 2017-18 and won the treble in 2022-23, his second after Barcelona in 2008-09. He has three Champions Leagues, and he left the Etihad at the end of last season with 17 major trophies from a decade in Manchester.

The table does not tell which coach is better, because Mourinho won his two European Cups with Porto and Inter when both clubs were relatively short of money. Pep Guardiola won his with Barcelona at their peak and with Manchester City after a decade of spending.

A tactical coach is the person who makes the eleven in front of him tough to play against than the wages suggest. To rely on that test, Inter in 2010 and the first Chelsea are still up there. On the test of doing the same thing for ten years in one league, Manchester City under Guardiola have no equal in England.

When Mourinho had a week to prepare for one tie, he took points and places off Guardiola’s best sides, and the Camp Nou night remains the one people go back to. When the games came every three days and the other team stayed deep, Guardiola’s control of the first pass wore them down, which is how Manchester City won titles in seasons when the league tried to stop them.

Mourinho’s third seasons have somehow not really worked, at Chelsea, at Real Madrid and at Manchester United. This is because a team that lives on duels needs the same strategy in March that it had in September. Pep Guardiola’s sides have faded too, usually when the full-back who steps inside is injured and the spare man is gone.

Today, the old argument still makes sense. Real Madrid brought Mourinho back in June on a three-year deal, after two seasons without a trophy, and he started work in July. Guardiola has left Manchester City, and the club have been found to have broken Premier League financial rules on 114 of the 115 charges, with an appeal still to come. While he was at Fenerbahce, Mourinho said Guardiola had won six trophies to his three, and that he had won his own ‘failrly’, adding that he did not want to win by dealing with lawsuits.

If you have one week and a worse squad, Mourinho’s block and his break still look the better plan, which is what he told Guardiola when he said the party could wait. If you have a season, and you want the same idea to hold in December and in May, Guardiola’s control of the ball has won more often, and that is the better answer to who coaches the game itself.
