The Gerd Müller Trophy Does Not Weaken Kane and Mbappé’s Ballon d’Or Cases

The conversation around the 2026 Ballon d’Or has turned into a discussion about what should matter the most: goals, trophies, creativity, influence or the overall quality of a season.

Harry Kane, Kylian Mbappé and Lamine Yamal show three different sides of that discussion.

Kane and Mbappé have based their arguments on goal numbers while Yamals case is more about his creative influence, personal awards and success with Barcelona and Spain. With the Ballon d’Or still to be decided, the Gerd Müller Trophy has become part of that discussion.

That is where the discussion gets controversial.

The Gerd Müller Trophy is given to the goalscorer in club and international football for the year. It makes sense that Kane and Mbappé are strong candidates for it.

Calling them players who are "only" in the race for the Gerd Müller Trophy misses what their goals really mean.

Goals Are Not a Separate Part of Their Games

Kane's numbers make it hard to ignore his case.

The Bayern Munich player recently became the player to reach 100 Bundesliga goals doing it in 98 games. He ended the 2025-26 season with 73 goals for club and country a number only beaten in times by Lionel Messi's 82-goal season in 2011-12. Kane has also started the season well, continuing to score and assist for Bayern.

Yet looking at Kane as just a goalscorer misses the parts of his game.

He often moves into midfield, connects attacks and makes chances for his teammates. His value is not only in finishing chances. It is also in helping to create the chances he ends up finishing.

That difference is important in this Ballon d’Or talk.

A forward who scores a lot but does little in goal contribution can be judged differently from a forward who's both a scorer, a creator and a link player.

Kane is, in that group with his 7 assists and 51 total chances created across all club competitions for his Bayern last season.

Mbappé Has More Than Finishing in His Arsenal

Mbappé faces a similar problem with Kane in the way his Ballon d’Or case is discussed.

Mbappés scoring record naturally dominates his Ballon d'Or conversation. Mbappé was the World Cup's leading scorer and was very instrumental for Real Madrid, winning the Golden Boot and Champion league highest goal scorer.

But Mbappés threat is not limited to what happens when he gets the final touch.

Mbappés pace changes the opposition's defensive structures; his carrying ability lets him break lines without needing a pass, and Mbappés movement in the midfield opens space for teammates. Mbappé can stretch a defence, attack the space behind it, and create chances even when Mbappé is not the player finishing the move. He has a total of 6 assists and 80 chances created across all competitions for Real Madrid in the 2025-26 season.

So yes, the Gerd Müller Trophy is a natural recognition of Mbappés scoring output, but it does not define the full value of Mbappés season.

Mbappé himself has been more direct about his Ballon d’Or ambitions than Kane. He often argued that his individual performances give him a case even though Real Madrid and France did not win major team trophies.

Kane by contrast has largely chosen to let his performances speak for themselves. After Kane's record-breaking display, he said he preferred to let his actions on the pitch do the talking and said that the Ballon d’Or decision was outside his control.

Yamal Represents a Different Ballon d’Or Argument

Yamal's case is built differently.

The Barcelona wingers' supporters can point to his LaLiga Player of the Season award, his output and his role in Spains World Cup success. Yamal has also made his own position clear that he should be the favourite, recently identifying Mbappé as his rival for the award.

That gives the debate a contrast.

Yamal's strongest argument is not that he scored more goals than Kane or Mbappé. It is that he has more overall influence, creativity and performances in matches; he believes that these footballing qualities deserve greater weight than just scoring goals.

That is a solid argument.

But it should not diminish what Kane and Mbappé have done last season.

The Gerd Müller Trophy Is Not a Consolation Prize

This is where the conversation around the Gerd Müller Trophy can become unnecessarily reductive.

Calling Kane and Mbappé "Gerd Müller candidates" as though that automatically weakens their Ballon d’Or claims creates a separation between goalscoring and overall influence.

For forwards, goals are often the result of their brilliance.

A striker who repeatedly finds positions, creates separation, carries the ball through pressure, links attacks and finishes chances is not simply accumulating goals. Kane and Mbappe is influencing the game through goals.

The mistake is treating the Gerd Müller Trophy as though it exists at the bottom of a hierarchy with the Ballon d’Or sitting above it as the "individual award.

It does not.

The Gerd Müller Trophy and the Ballon d’Or recognise different things.

The Gerd Müller Trophy rewards goalscoring production. The Ballon d’Or asks voters to assess a player's individual season within its broader context.

A player can therefore have a case for both without contradiction.

The Ballon d’Or Debate Should Be Bigger Than Aesthetic Preference

The Ballon d'Or debate should be more than personal opinion.

Recently, there is a trend of boxing players into simple categories that do not tell their full story.

The player who gets a lot of goals is called the "numbers player.

The one who shows off with style is known as the "eye-test player.

Football isn't like that.

Goals are important because they can make or break a game. Creativity is important because it brings about objectives. Ball progression is important because it changes the location of attacks. Movement is important because it creates space. Link play is important because it ties in parts of an attack.

And these top forwards excel at more than one skill.

Which is why Harry Kane and Kylian Mbappé don't have to apologise for being goal scorers.

They don't have to play it down when it comes to their numbers, in order to make a case for the Ballon d'Or.

Lamine Yamal doesn't need their impact to be lessened so his performances can be recognised.

The Gerd Müller Trophy must remain as it was designed – a goal-scoring trophy. It should not be a consolation for Kane and Mbappé.
